Statement by Kirsty Williams, Minister for Education

I’d like to thank parents for listening to the advice and keeping most children at home. I’d be grateful if tomorrow morning you only use schools or childcare as a last resort.

The advice has not changed as a result of tonight’s decision to further restrict movement, which our First Minister, along with other UK leaders took with the sole aim of slowing the spread of coronavirus.

Children should be at home wherever possible, critical workers will still need to have safe care arrangements for their children.  Our schools and childcare settings are providing a vital service to support critical workers and our most vulnerable children.

Those involved in the current arrangements looking after children should continue. Many thanks to our amazing teaching and childcare professionals for their commitment in this time of national need.

This situation will continue for the immediate term but we will be reviewing with healthcare professionals, local authorities and our teaching unions.

You will shortly receive a questionnaire about Key Worker status which will need to be completed as soon as possible.  For details, please click HERE

COVID 19 Update

The school continues to operate at full capacity and I would like to praise the amazingly positive attitude of staff and pupils for their response to this current challenge. Thank you also to all the parents for their support, despite the anxiety and frustration that we are all experiencing as a result of this dynamic and rapidly changing situation.
As a school, we are awaiting clarification from the Welsh Government about the exact details of the arrangements for school closures, especially with regard to provision for vulnerable children and those of Key Workers. We have been told to expect a further communication from Welsh Government later today.
What we do know at this point unless we are advised otherwise:
  • The school will close to pupils at 3.20pm on Friday 20 March.
  • Teaching staff will provide online learning opportunities for all pupils from Monday (for two weeks up to the published Easter break).
  • Pupils will be provided with further guidance and support to enable them to continue to learn whilst they are at home. This will include a learning timetable to be given out tomorrow.
  • Parents will also be provided with guidance to support their children’s learning at home, this will be released tomorrow.
Whilst GCSE and A-Level exams this summer are cancelled we will be supporting Year 11 and 13 pupils to complete their studies.  Even though public examinations have been cancelled, we will work with pupils to support them in building a portfolio of evidence to ensure the grades that they are awarded are fair. This will also support them in securing their onward education and career journey.
HPV vaccinations planned for year 8 tomorrow are now cancelled.  They will be rearranged for the next convenient opportunity.
As we receive more information we will update the information here, on our school website –
Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.
