Cymraeg/Welsh

Fel adran teimlwn yn gryf dros ddyfodol a datblygiad yr iaith ac anelwn at ddefnyddio’r Gymraeg ar draws yr ysgol gyfan. Defnyddir y Gymraeg yn achlysurol ym mhob pwnc  ond fel Adran ein hamcan ydy annog pob disgybl i ddysgu’r iaith i bwrpas a’i siarad gyda hyder a rhuglder. Rydym yn cynnig amrywiaeth o gyrsiau gwahanol ynghyd  â defnyddio ystod o ddulliau cyffrous a heriol o addysgu. Yn naturiol gwelwn y Gymraeg fel rhan annatod o fywyd unrhyw blentyn yng Nghymru a’n cyfrifoldeb ni ydy datblygu ymwybyddiaeth o gymreictod ymysg y plant.

At Ysgol Greenhill we are committed to the development of the Welsh Language across the whole school and the use of Welsh plays an important part in the everyday life of the school.  Both pupils and staff are actively encouraged to use incidental Welsh in and around the school, this commitment outside of the classroom environment encourages the confidence and fluency of pupils which can be related back to their studies.

The Welsh department at Ysgol Greenhill is made up of a team of forward thinking and committed staff.  Our priority at Ysgol Greenhill is that pupils should enjoy their study of the language whilst developing their abilities simultaneously.  Topics are relevant to their everyday lives and are taught through a wide range of tasks and activities.  Pupils are given opportunities for experiences outside the classroom and regularly visit the Urdd centres, a particular favourite being Llangrannog.  Older pupils studying at GCSE and A Level have travelled further afield to North Wales and France to enable them to support their studies.  A wide range of weekly extra-curricular clubs are also run by the department and are attended enthusiastically by pupils across all Year groups.

All pupils at Ysgol Greenhill study Welsh as a first or second language. At KS3, pupils study a vast range of topics with a focus on developing Key Skills.  Pupils are assessed on their Written, Reading, Listening and Oral skills.  At KS4 pupils study full-course GCSE Welsh where the focus is on skills that are transferable to the workplace.  The Welsh department at Ysgol Greenhill has a history of success at GCSE Level with 2016’s outstanding results being some of the most successful yet – 95.4% of pupils achieved A* – C pass grades, a fantastic effort by the pupils involved I’m certain you’ll agree.

Many pupils decide to continue their study of Welsh to A/AS Level.   The course encompasses a wide range of skills and further develops their knowledge and understanding of the subject.  Pupils begin to study film, poetry and the structures of the language.   There is a strong emphasis on their ability to converse through the medium of Welsh on a range of topics.  There is also a coursework element to the course, pupils have the opportunity to select a topic of interest that relates to the subject.

The annual Eisteddfod is a particular favourite amongst pupils and staff alike.  It provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate our language and culture.  Pupils enjoy a variety of both on and off-stage competitions across a wide range of subjects.  There is always plenty of fun to be had on Eisteddfod day and is a fantastic platform for us to celebrate the wealth of talent that we have at Greenhill.
